My artist statement
As my university career came to a close, I had to write a statement about my work for my gallery show. Rather than posting it 11 times, I'll just post it here
My work derives from a deeply embedded motivation to prove that beauty is not defined by the perfections of the form, rather, the imperfections. Birthmarks, stretch marks, scars, asymmetry, and body hair are characteristics that are beautiful to me. I direct the viewer to look through my eyes and notice I portray a non-glamorous approach to my models, but rather honest, yet sensitive point of view.
Instead of posing models, I observe and photograph them as they are. Zooming in on the figure and cropping in an unusual way, I focus the viewer specifically on body characteristics. Using only available light and a twin lens camera, I apply manual methods to produce my photographs. I am fascinated by the organic, spontaneous qualities of film and they are essential to my body of work.
All of my shots have been produced via color processor and no computer altering has been added (just dusting, etc)
I will miss my access to facilities as I walk into the real world as a college graduate with a BFA in fine art photography...
However the world's a big place and I've only just begun.
Thanks to you all who have helped me and provided me with a boost throughout my college career.
Especially to one certain special aussie photographer You know who you are.
much love,
K
